Shapes and Fables was born from a passion for nature and all it's curious infinite rhythms and forms.
Sebastian Cunard and Katharine Jeans have a background in art, design and music spanning nearly three decades. At the root of both of their interests is a love of nature and the landscape: “patterns occur everywhere in the natural world and inspiration is infinite”.
Over the years Sebastian and Katharine have been experimenting with handmade methods such as printmaking, drawing, painting and other mediums pushing the boundaries of creative formality and instead looking for a playful freedom with colour, shapes and textures.
“We look not at the the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.”
Their work also plays with the fusion of narrative and pattern, creating literal themes in their work as well as creating patterns with words.
NOT JUST A SERIES OF REPETITIONS…
Our process of creativity begins with the chosen medium and the ideas evolve from a fusion of the material along with the idea or subject. The patterns and shapes emerge from the lines and forms created then decisions are made as to which forms and rhythms work.
When the forms are repeated into patterns the rhythm creates movement into a broader visual abstraction beyond sense and knowledge and the magic happens.
Lino cuts and wood cuts have a particular fluidity during the carving process that encourage curves and linear shapes. Once the carving stage is complete and the block is formed there is great freedom to manipulate the image further with additional blocks and different printing techniques opening up endless colour ranges and combinations.
